UL Environment helps support the growth and development of sustainable products, services and organizations in the global marketplace through standards development, educational services, and independent third party assessment and certification.
At the same time the sustainable products manufacturing industry was gaining momentum, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. ® began to have conversations with some of its customers about the need for independent claims validation, certification to standards and even the establishment of sustainability standards across numerous industries.
Just as with product safety, where Underwriters Laboratories got its start 115 years ago, manufacturers were saying they wanted standards and trusted evidence they had met the standards.

Since 1989, Trees for the Future has been helping communities around the world plant trees. Through seed distribution, agroforestry training, and its country programs, they have empowered rural groups to restore tree cover to their lands. Planting trees protects the environment and helps to preserve traditional livelihoods and cultures for generations.
Planting trees in agroforestry systems provides a myriad of benefits, such as food; forage for animals; sustainable fuel wood and construction materials; increased agricultural yields; improved water infiltration and aquifer recharge; and protection of soils from wind and water erosion. However, planting trees can be difficult when the canopy has disappeared, topsoil has been eroded, and the climate and growing conditions have changed.
